Did you know that there are 85,000 chemicals on the market today but only about 200 of them have been tested for the long-term effects that they have on human health?  What’s even crazier to me is that most of the products are marketed towards families with young kids. When using these products, they leave a film on surfaces and fumes in the air we breath.  This can cause things like, asthma, skin irritations, eczema, respiratory problems, even long term effects like cancer.

Not only do we need to be aware of the cleaning products we use in our home, but also food and personal products that we use on ourselves and our kids.  Products like lotions, body wash and soap, deodorant, makeup, shampoos.  I never realized the dangers some of the ingredients in these products have.   It’s so important to read labels and educate ourselves and others that there are alternative products we can use that are efficient and safe.

The Smity Life was created for a way for me to expand my mission, to create awareness of the harmful chemicals we are exposed to in our every day lives. I became a Norwex Independent Consultant in 2014 shortly after I first learned about this amazing company and the products they offer.   Since I was completely unaware of how many products we use every day that contain harmful chemicals, this has been a HUGE eye opener.

I have 2 young girls and I want to raise them in the most safe environment possible. It can be so overwhelming when you begin to think about it all but you can start with one thing at a time.  One small change can make a HUGE difference!

These are just a few suggestions to reduce chemicals in your home.  You don’ t have to change everything at once, just one thing at a time and be more aware of the products you are using.   Even if I create a Safe Haven one home at a time, my mission will be fulfilled!  🙂

Hi Danelle, great tips. I am a butcher and I have seen the increase in requests for Organic Meats over the past few years. Customers that I deal with are contstanly asking for more info on chemicals in foods in general. Supporting local farmers is a great way not only to help them but also help yourself and the environment as farmers always strive to produce good safe foods for everyone. They understand better than the big multi nationals.

Keep up the good work and keep spreading the news.

    Hi Danelle,
I was not aware that only 200 out of 85,000 chemicals have been tested for the long-term effects that they have on human health. That is absolutely something to keep in mind!
I try to avoid chemicals – especially in food. But as you say, there are a lot of other products that have dangerous chemical like makeup, shampoo, etc. I will try to avoid products with ‘fragrance’ on the label.
    Thank you for sharing this!

It is very alarming and can be overwhelming to think about, but one small change can make a HUGE difference. Once you start to learn about the harmful chemicals and what to look for, it starts to get a little easier and you learn what products are good to use. Thanks for reading and for your comment.

    Hi Danelle,
I really appreciated your post. I’m also a SAHM of 2, and it’s important to me to have a healthy home for them – and for my husband and me too. What I appreciated most though is that you seem to understand that in this busy Mom-life, small changes are the way to go. I have friends (who are also Norwex consultants) who unfortunately regularly make me feel guilty about using ANY chemicals at ANY moment for ANY situation. I know natural is best, but it’s not ALWAYS do-able. Nor does it always fit in the budget… 🙁 . Small changes are definitely easier/cheaper than a total home/cleaning closet makeover!
HOWEVER, the answer to your question is that I bought the Norwex window cloths recently – LOVE them!! Easier to clean windows AND better for your family to go chemical free.
    Have a great day!

Thanks for your comment Marlaine! I totally understand, It took me some time to completely switch over to Norwex products and get used to them. Being a consultant does help in receiving a discount and/or products for free. It can be very pricey but it does save you time and money in the long run. That’s why I do say, one step at a time. It’s nice that most of the products will last 2 years or more if used and cared for properly. I am so glad you love your window cloths…they are definitely amazing!
